Local Event Kicks Off Breast Cancer Awareness Month

CEDAR HILL, Texas- Breast Cancer Awareness month is in full effect and The Celebrating Life Foundation hosted its 14th annual “Sister to Sister” fitness festival in Cedar Hill on Saturday. The non-profit educates African American women about the breast cancer and encourages early detection.

Very thankful for my diagnoses because with early detection there’s a 99% survival rate for early stage breast cancer,” breast cancer survivor, Alicia Brown-Young explained.

According to the American cancer society, African -American women have the highest number of breast cancer deaths out of any other race. But, these ladies are doing everything they can to stop the stats.

“Our objective is to help get the message out,” founder of The Celebrating Life Foundation told Newsfix. “…help encourage women to do those things they need to empower themselves.”

The day-long fest featured entertainment, healthy cooking lessons, and most importantly — free mammogram screenings.

“African-American women just need to stay on top of our health issues and just believe in wellness,” one attendee said.

From sister to sister, these ladies are hoping to make a difference in their community one step at a time.
